Robert Ingersoll was born in Dresden, New York. His mother died when he was only three years old. His father was a Congregationalist minister, adhering to a Calvinist theology, and also an ardent abolitionist. After the death of Robert’s mother, he moved around New England and the Midwest, where he held ministerial positions with many congregations, moving frequently.
